Nikon announces 16.1-megapixel Coolpix P310 compact camera, new S-Series lineup

Nikon's announced a number of new cameras this evening, including the Coolpix P310, a 16.1-megapixel compact shooter with up to 3200 ISO (Hi1 6400 equivalent) and a lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.8. The camera incorporates Nikon's VR image-stabilization technology, and features a number of control features borrowed from the company's DSLR line, including manual exposure control, a top-mounted control wheel for adjusting shutter speed and aperture, and a new Zoom Memory function that allows users to jump immediately to popular lens focal lengths on command.

The camera's backside-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor should offer improved performance in low-light situations, which you'll be able to see nicely on the camera's 3-inch high, 921,000-dot LCD screen. 1080p video capture at 30fps is also on board, along with in-camera editing software for completing your home videos right on the camera itself. Looking very much like Nikon's answer to the popular Canon S100, the P310 is available in any color you want — as long as it's black — and will be released in February at a suggested retail price of $329.95.
